Progressive's average motorcycle insurance rate for our sample rider and policy was $704 – not much more than the New York average. Dairyland and Markel quoted our 45 year old rider on the higher end, with quotes that were more than $800. The average rate quoted by Markel, the most expensive company in the study, was $861 and more than 2x the cost of GEICO's. The sample motorcycle insurance policy covered included bodily injury protection ($100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident) and $50,000 in property damage. The largest city in the state, New York City, had much more expensive rates than the other large cities. In fact, the only other large city with quotes higher than the state average was Buffalo and the average premium quoted was only 17.9% higher than the average. The other cities we looked at -- Rochester, Syracuse and Albany -- had much cheaper motorcycle insurance rates compared to the New York average. In 2007, the city was one of the "most livable cities" in the U.S. and, in 2010, Forbes ranked it the third best place to raise a family. Like Buffalo, Rochester's population has declined but the local economy has evolved and includes a number of Fortune 1000 companies. Quotes for our sample motorcycle insurance policy and rider were 5.8% lower than the state average. Syracuse, NY The fourth most populous city in the state of New York us Syracuse, with more than 145,000 residents. It's part of a metropolitan area with more than 730,000 and has historically been an important industrial city, as well as a hub for education institutions. Syracuse ranked with one of the best motorcycle insurance rates in the state, and was about 16.9% less than the state average for our sample rider. Albany, NY Albany, the state capital of New York, is the sixth largest city in the state. About 100,000 residents call Albany home but it's at the center of a metropolitan area with more than 1 million. The city is known for its history and significance dating back to colonial America as well as its architecture and culture. Albany was among the cheapest cities in terms of motorcycle insurance rates. Quotes for out sample policy and rider were 5.5% lower than the state average. Most Expensive Motorcycle Insurance in New York Perhaps not surprisingly, the five places with the most expensive motorcycle insurance in New York are all located within New York City. Three areas sampled are within the borough of Queens and the others are two separate boroughs. Urban areas tend to have higher motorcycle insurance rates, as we've seen in our studies.
