We conducted a study to show which companies generally had the best motorcycle insurance rates in Michigan. The study included quotes from four major carriers: Markel, Progressive, GEICO and Dairyland, all of which are considered to be among the best motorcycle insurance companies. The graph below includes the average premium quoted by each carrier for our sample policy and rider, along with the state average. The company with the lowest motorcycle insurance rates in Michigan was Markel, which quoted our sample policy to be $575 on average. The average rates quoted by Progressive and GEICO were $760 and $779, respectively –- only slightly higher than Michigan's overall average. Dairyland had the highest average quote of $869 which is 51% higher than the cheapest (Markel's average). The company with the best motorcycle insurance rates for a sample rider and policy in Michigan was Markel, according to a study of major carriers in the state by ValuePenguin. *The Average Annual Rate is rounded to the nearest whole dollar amount. Best Motorcycle Insurance Rates In Michigan: by City We gathered motorcycle insurance quotes for some of the most populous cities in Michigan to see which ones had the best rates. The findings were similar to others across the country. Generally, large cities and metropolitan areas have higher motorcycle insurance rates and this held true in Michigan. Detroit, the state's largest city, quoted rates for our sample policy and rider that were more than 2x the state average. However, other large cities had modestly higher rates. Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Flint all had quotes within 6% of the Michigan average. Even though Lansing is one of the largest cities in the state, quotes there were actually 1% below the state average. The rankings reflect the population of the city in the state. Detroit, MI The place with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in Michigan by far was Detroit, the state’s largest city. Detroit has more than 680,000 residents and is known for its history of manufacturing, music and sports teams. Quotes for our sample policy and rider were 107% higher than the state average. Grand Rapids, MI The second largest city in Michigan is Grand Rapids. It is the largest city in western Michigan, with nearly 200,000 residents, and is at the center of a metropolitan area with more than 1.3 million people. The city and the suburban sprawl of surrounding communities form a diverse local economy. Motorcycle insurance rates in Grand Rapids were 5% higher than the state average. Lansing, MI Michigan's capital is centrally located in the state and has roughly 115,000 residents. It is well-known as a hub of higher education, with two medical schools, a veterinary school, two nursing schools and two law schools – many of which are affiliated with Michigan State University. In Lansing, motorcycle insurance quotes were 1% lower than the Michigan average, which is uncommon for a large city. Ann Arbor, MI Ann Arbor has about 113,000 residents and is part of a metropolitan area with more than 344,000. The University of Michigan moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1837 and the city rapidly grew around it. The University of Michigan is one of the foremost schools in the country and research and techonology there has also attracted many companies to Ann Arbor. Motorcycle insurance rates there were only 6% higher than the state average. Flint, MI Northwest of Detroit is the city of Flint, which is home to more than 100,000 residents. For decades, it was home to automobile manufacturers but it has since struggled financially. Buick and Chevrolet were both founded in Flint. The city's motorcycle insurance rates were 6% higher than the Michigan average. Most Expensive Motorcycle Insurance In Michigan The five places with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in Michigan were all nearby and included the state's largest city, Detroit. We've see similar trends in other states -- larger cities and their surrounding suburbs frequently have more expensive motorcycle insurance premiums than other places. Detroit itself had the most expensive rates, where quotes for our sample property were more than 2x the state average. Pontiac, MI The city of Pontiac is about 30 miles northwest of Detroit and home to more than 60,000 residents. The NFL’s Detroit Lions played at the Pontiac Silverdome from 1975 to 2002, when the team moved back to downtown Detroit. The city is known for its annual Arts, Beats and Eats festival that features exactly what the name implies. Motorcycle insurance rates in Pontiac were 29% higher than the Michigan average. Dearborn, MI Dearborn is a suburb of Detroit but it’s also home to the world headquarters of the Ford Motor Company. The city has more than 95,000 residents and 40,000 of them are Arab, which led to the city becoming the home of The Arab American National Museum. Motorcycle insurance premiums in Dearborn were 21% higher than the state average. Southgate, MI Southgate is south of Detroit and another suburb of Michigan’s largest city. The suburb is full of middle-class families and has about 30,000 residents. The Southland Center (formerly called Southgate Shopping Center) opened in 1957 and is still a popular place and frequented by locals. Motorcycle insurance rates in Southgate were 20% higher than the state average. Mount Clemens, MI North of Detroit alongside the Clinton River is the city of Mount Clemens. The suburb of Detroit has about 17,000 residents and is known for its arts and culture. It was well known for its mineral baths that attracted many famous visitors throughout the early 20th century, including Clark Gable, Babe Ruth and the Vanderbilt family. Motorcycle insurance rates in Mount Clemens were 19% higher than the state average. Average Motorcycle Insurance Rates in Michigan: by City This comparative study of motorcycle insurance premiums in Michigan was done by gathering and analyzing quotes from five major carriers across 124 municipalities and census-designated places.
