Our study of the five largest cities in Maryland showed results that were both consistent and unlike those in other states. Using the identical sample motorcycle insurance policy and rider in other states, typically the largest cities have the highest motorcycle insurance rates. This was the case in Maryland, where Baltimore had some of the highest rates, by far. But other large cities not only had inexpensive rates, some had motorcycle premiums that were below the state's average. Baltimore, MD The place with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in Maryland was the state’s largest city, Baltimore. Baltimore is a major city on the east coast, with a metropolitan area of more than 2.7 million residents, and a rich history and a seaport that is still significant. It’s known as a “city of neighborhoods” and attracts millions of visitors each year. Motorcycle insurance rates in Baltimore were the least affordable in Maryland. Quotes for our sample motorcycle were 77% higher than the state average. Frederick, MD Frederick is home to an estimated 69,000 residents or more. It was an important crossroads point in colonial America and still has a strong local economy. The average motorcycle insurance premium in Frederick was 22% lower than the Maryland average. Rockville, MD Just north of Washington D.C. is Rockville, a city with about 61,000 residents. Several companies and federal government institutions are located in the city or nearby, as well as many retailers. Motorcycle insurance rates in Rockville were also much lower than Baltimore's, at 16% lower than the state average. Gaithersburg, MD Northwest of Washington D.C. is the city of Gaithersburg. It is home to nearly 60,000 residents, many who commute to and from the nation's capital. It was originally settled as an agricultural community, but like many others, its economy has evolved over time to include other industries. Motorcycle insurance rates in Gaithersburg were 2% higher than the state average. Bowie, MD With a population of more than 54,000 residents, Bowie is the fifth-largest city in Maryland. CNN ranked the city as one of the best places to live in the U.S. in 2014. Motorcycle insurance rates in Bowie were just 4% higher than the Maryland average. Most Expensive Motorcycle Insurance In Maryland The five places with the most expensive motorcycle insurance rates in Maryland include the state's largest city and suburbs of the District of Columbia. It is common for insurance rates in large cities and their surroundings areas to me more expensive than state averages. It is interesting that none of Baltimore's suburbs were in the top five most expensive places, even though the city itself was the most expensive in the state. Cheverly, MD The town of Cheverly is just north of the District of Columbia. It is bordered by and at the confluence of the John Hanson Highway and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. More than 6,300 people live in Cheverly, which is primarily a commuter town to the nearby major cities. Motorcycle insurance rates in Cheverly were 38% higher than the state average. New Carrollton, MD Directly north of Cheverly is another planned suburb, New Carrollton. The city has more than 12,000 residents and was named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a delegate to the Continental Congress who also signed of the Declaration of Independence. Motorcycle insurance premiums in New Carrollton were 37% higher than the state average. Bladensburg, MD Bladensburg is another suburb of Washington D.C. It has a population of roughly 9,000 residents and is home to a number of historical sites. One historic site called Indian Queen Tavern, is also known as the George Washington House because the nation’s first president is said to have stayed there in the 1760s. Motorcycle insurance rates in Bladensburg were 37% higher than the Maryland average. District Heights, MD Another suburb of Washington D.C., District Heights is less that 10 miles from the city. It was farmland for much of the city’s history and now is home to about 6,000 people. It recently celebrated its 80th anniversary of becoming a city. Motorcycle insurance in District Heights were 37% higher than the state average.
